What is the problem with youth sports today? Why do parents and coaches feel they need to win at all costs?

It seems as though in my sons’ games (ages 6 and 10, play soccer and baseball/t-ball), winning is everything. One player has come close to kicking my 6 year old son in the head countless times when he tries to save a goal, his parents see nothing wrong with it. My 10 year old was spit on in his game last week and tripped twice (as called by the ref). In baseball, they have been hit by countless pitches, screamed at, parents have argued calls from the stands with the umpire…when did youth sports stop being about kids having fun and start being so cutthroat? I am ready to give up the organized youth sports and look elsewhere for my sons…maybe karate?

I think you answered your own question. Parents and coaches feel like they need to win at all costs…. that is the problem with youth sports. Don’t get me wrong… I don’t like losing, but really… its t-ball after all.

I am not sure that it is isolated to sports. Karate and even chess club is that way. My daughter’s chess competition was nearly as bad as some of the sporting events I have been to… just a little quieter. Seriously cutthroat.

I think you just have to find a good team/league and ignore the insanity as much as you can.
