How can I mix my Mechanical Engineering degree with my love of sports and fitness into a career?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2011 and filed under fitness sports | 1 Comment »

So im working on my BS in Mechanical Engineering, but after a recent internship, I found that I dont really want to sit on a computer all day doing Soldworks lol. I love sports and working out, am a collegiate athlete now, and would love to work in the field some day. What would be a good career choice where I could utilize my engineering skills and my love of fitness.

there are two areas that spring to mind.

How about repairs and engineering in motor sport, either formula one or motor bikes?

Another idea, you could perhaps get a job dealing with the repairs or design of fitness machines?

These jobs won’t keep you fit but they’ll mix both interests. I’m not sure how you’d get into them so perhaps you could Google it or contact a local race track to get inside info?

What happens during college sports tryouts?

Posted by admin on June 26th, 2011 and filed under college sports | 1 Comment »

I am hopefully gonna start college in the Fall & I’d like to play some sort of sport. I was thinking softball since I played a little in 8th grade.

Anywho, I was just wondering what happens during these tryouts?
Do you already have to be pretty good with experience, etc.?
Do they train whoever tries out?

Can someone like me who appears to be in shape but is really not and played softball VERY briefly about 5 years ago be considered for a team?

Your response is greatly appreciated! ;]

I’m afraid you won’t be considered for a team, the overwhelming majority of college athletes have lots of experience and are recruited by the college to play for them. You could try to play for an intramural team, most colleges have intramural sports teams.

I just turned on Sports Center and what do you think the top story is?

That’s right!

Obviously, how could you talk about anything else: The NFL lock out.

After that: Dirk Nowitzki

Then: Derik Jeter on the DL.

Isn’t there something else, that might be just a little bit more important than the Yankees short stop, in the pivotal game number 66 of a 162 game season?

ESPN doesn’t give a sh*t about hockey. Why should anyone be surprised at all by this?

How exactly do high school sports seasons work?

Posted by admin on June 22nd, 2011 and filed under sports | 2 Comments »

Ok im gonna be a freshman after summer vacation and i was planning on doing two sports, Cross country in the Fall and Wrestling in the winter. I’ve never really played sports before this so i have no idea at all how this all works. How exactly do the seasons work? Do you play a sport in one season and stop that sport after that season is over and move on to the next sport in the next season? IDK HELP D:

see im from Baton Rouge & i go to Woodlawn High school. I play football but i tried wrestling & track. So with my school we work football everyday. During da season we have practice as normal but during off season we lift weights during 5th hour. then we do spring training for a week & take about 2 weeks off. When summer starts we do more summer work outs which is alot of running & lifting. yeah alot huh but dats jus football. now with wrestling our school wasnt known for wrestling so we jus did wrestlin only for da time between January to March & then track started so i had to do both at the same time. wrestling ended & it was time to do track meets. It was Over at da end of April for us & we ended until this week where we have to run & lift to get ready for track. so yeah it sound like a lot but its really not. im 6′2”. 235 lbs & not skinny so yeah. if u really like it u wont mind it

What are your reasons for putting your child in soccer or other youth sports?

Posted by admin on June 19th, 2011 and filed under youth sports | 16 Comments »

Mom’s and dads, why are you having your child play soccer? Is it for fitness, fun, to compete…? What are the main concerns and goals you have as your son or daughter starts youth sports?

My middle child plays soccer and adores it, he’s looking very forward to Spring season coming up!!! First and foremost we play for fun because he truly loves it, then of course the other benefits, discipline, learning team effort and working together for a common goal, exercise, healthy competition, and sportsmanship (which our league stresses). We are hoping our next one wants to play as soon as he’s old enough, but its something we would never push, we want them to choose an activity that THEY enjoy and therefore benefit from :)

What is the best age to begin your child in youth sports?

My daughter is close to being 4. What is the best age to get her involved in organized youth sports programs to gauge her interest and enjoyment of such activities?

the best age to start is when a child is ready, it varies ALOT. but for starters put the child in a sport that focuses on fun rather than competition. Show your child different sports and let her try them . If she likes it let her continue. Meet the coach talk to him/her and make sure he/she is what you want. If your child shows interest then let her try the sport and gradualy increase competitive level if the child wants too. good luck.

How much money does the average college sports team bring in verses how much they cost?

Posted by admin on June 12th, 2011 and filed under college sports | 2 Comments »

I’m curious, if college sports teams really do bring in less than they cost, then why do we have them. Can anyone tell me if they do cost more than they bring in?

Any school that fields a football team gets most of their sports-revenue from that team. Football usually pays for the other sports, as they bring in little to nothing in revenue. Football is king in America.

Is there a legal way to bet on sports in the US outside of Nevada?

Posted by admin on June 8th, 2011 and filed under sports bet | 1 Comment »

Does the ban on Internet gambling in the US include betting on sports? And do any casinos take bets on sports outside of Nevada? I’m not counting gambling sports like horse racing and dog racing.

It’s a pretty tricky question, but for the most part, Nevada is the only state that offers legalized sports betting (although Delaware does offer parlay cards at this time as well). However, as you probably know, the internet offers many online sportsbooks where you can bet. While the actual wagering on the games is "legal", the transfer of funds to an offshore sportsbook is what is considered "illegal."

I put those in quotes because it really is such a gray area at this time. However, there are many quality sportsbooks that offer the opportunity to wager on sports. Millions of individuals have been participating in it within the US for years, but again the actual transfer of funds to an offshore book does violate US policy at this time…but again it’s up to you. I won’t say one way or the other.

However, if you’re looking for help in choosing a reputable/quality sportsbook, I would suggest you check out http://www.sports-betting-insights.com/choosing-a-sportsbook.html . This will give you some good information in what to look for if you decide to go that route. Best of luck.
